Homeschool Report: May

Here's some of what my daughter Grace, 4th grade, has been learning this month:Main Lesson Work: Man and animal unit: reading about and writing narrations on various animals. Emphasis on the three fold nature of man (head, trunk, limbs) and the balanced development of humans which distinguishes us from the higher animals. The pictures in this post are samples from Grace's lesson book. They vary between creative writing, and factual narrations. She has been watching the Life of Mammals DVD series...we've loved these movies, highly recommend them! Another valuable resource for this unit has been Dennis Klocek's Drawing From the Book of Nature.
Some favorites from the animal book basket:
D'Aulaire's Book of Animals, Eric Carle's Animals, Animals (poetry), and Tree of Life.
Spanish: Finally...after slogging through a curriculum neither one of us enjoyed for most of the year, I found BBC Spanish Steps while searching for next year's French curriculum (we'll be using BBC French next year). It's free, keeps her interest, and is easy to use. Grace's pace of learning has picked up considerably now that we've found this. I also like that there are frequent assessments so that I can gauge how she's learning.
Fine Arts: Watching Sister Wendy's Complete Collection, finishing up handwork projects (embroidery, sewing)
Other: Ballet and jazz lessons, science and guitar at Valley Academy
Reading: Books listed on sidebar
Math: Three lessons completed in Math-U-See; adding/subtracting, multiplying/dividing fractions, GCF, prime factorization

What beautiful drawings in her main lesson books!
We are also Waldorf homeschoolers, my children are younger than Grace so it is nice to see what you are up to in fourth grade!

I love reading your homeschool reports. J will be in 4th grade next year and it's so interesting to see what you're doing. We got a little flower garden. Do you use it much?

I always love reading about your schoolwork. It's so beautiful. Actually, just today I was thinking about the loveliness of Waldorf education. Thank you for sharing, and especially for the lovely glimpses into Grace's main lesson book. She draws with heart as well as talent.

It looks as if Grace is wrapping up the year quite nicely. I'm glad you found a language curriculum that works for you both. I may check out the French myself – I've been wanting to brush up my skills as of late.
Enjoy the weekend!

Thank you so much for your kind words, especially about Grace's artwork...I'll pass those on to her, and she'll be so happy.

Jane, I use the Little Flower Garden curriculum guides quite a bit when I'm planning out the year. Mine are all marked up with notes. I used to use a curriculum that told me exactly what to do every day, which this one doesn't do, but I kind of like the flexibility that Melisa's guides allow.

I love the choice of colors in her drawing and the interesting frames she drew around each of them. she prints neatly. I love the use of a lesson book as well, Ami uses it for some projects.

We watched Life of Birds and Life of Mammals, though Ami could not make it through a few of the episodes in which there was too much predation.

Ami loves loves loves Sr. Wendy. She did a series of art critiques, selecting her own paintings from online museums. You can e-mail me if you think Grace would like to read it.

I am so behind reading everyone's blogs. I was just thinking the other day how I would love to be homeschooling Amelia in third or fourth grade level- I think I am getting way over my head with the middle school years. Why does parenting always seem more simple when I look back, I know in a few years I will be looking back at seventh grade and think how simple it was then...I am never just content with what I have.

Anyways, beautiful lessons you have put together.
